| The Yarrowlumla Shire Council, with some contribution from Yass Shire, provides and pays for the running of vehicles and major equipment items. Residents of Yarrowlumla Shire pay a levy on their rates to help support the brigade. A levy is also made on the house insurance policies of rural landholders. Shire councils are obliged to apportion a certain proportion of their rate income to support their local rural fire brigade. This is a change from earlier days when bush fire brigades were largely self funded bodies, but with modern requirements and demands for services, the cost of running the Rural Fire Service is steadily on the increase. | |||||
| We are constantly facing the need for funds over and above those supplied by the Shire. For example, we are well under way with an upgrade to the Fire Station which will see the original station closed to vehicles and used entirely for training, meetings and other gatherings without the friendly and comforting presence of the troop carrier occupying one half of it. This will involve modification to the old station and the construction of a new and secure carport for the troopy. This must be funded from our own reserves and will give them a serious pummelling. We have also recently bought new UHF radios for several of the trucks to resolve problems with the implementation of the new emergency radio system. We are also steadily acquiring new alphanumeric pagers for the deputy captains so that they will receive a written message instead of just a beep when they go off. This will relieve congestion on the phone system and allow personnel to get more rapidly to emergency incidents. So you see, when we say we need extra financial support from the community, we are not spending it on frivolities. | |||||
